But you're wrong!! Meet my other passion…cooking. Well let me clarify that some more-- I love trying new food recipes and sampling spices I've never tried. The girls (Drew and Justin) snicker and crack jokes about my endless viewing of Martha Stewart. Last week Martha had on Eva Longora (just in case you haven't heard, she's from Texas) demonstrating her recipe for beef skirt steak. She topped her steak off with Queso Fresco (Mexican cheese that my girls thought was Feta cheese) and a squeeze of fresh lime. This all looked and sounded good but I wasn't motivated to make this until I ran across the following recipe while flipping through Southern Living magazines in the local library:

Smoky Barbecue Rub

Stir together 2 Tbsp. firmly packed dark brown sugar.

2 tsp. garlic salt.

1 tsp. chipotle Chile powder.
½ tsp. ground cumin.

¼ tsp. dried oregano.

Mix ingredients together and rub mixture on meat. Let meat marinated for 1-2 hours in refrigerator.

OK, I have a confession to make—I hate following directions! So this is what I did to the recipe. First of all, I couldn't find Chipotle Chile powder in our local grocery store so I did the next best thing. I found Chipotle Peppers in Adobe Sauce (canned). I chopped two of the peppers up fine and tested the heat of the peppers. I can't stand to much heat so two or three would be just right for me. I also added 1 tsp. of onion powder to the rub and lastly I added 2 Tbsp. of olive oil. So now instead of a rub, I got a paste J I rubbed the paste over the skirt steak and let marinate for three hours. I cooked the steak on my extra-large Forman Grill (I sometimes use my Forman grill like a stove-top grill) but this could also go on the outside grill. With the top open on the grill, the steak cooked for six minutes on each side. I thought if I cooked with the top open I could better control the heat and cooking time. Try slicing some red onions and red bell peppers, coating them with a little olive oil and salt & pepper. I used half of the grill for the steak and the other half for the peppers and onions.

I served the steak as tacos with slice of red onion and red peppers, a squeeze of lime, chunks of avocado and Queso Fresco. In the picture you will see I added some homemade potato salad. It all was um, um, good!

This meal was very easy to make, fast and cheap. You just can't go wrong with all those qualities. I hope you get the chance to try the recipe out. Please let me know what you think and/or if you added something different.

Okay, now on to something "quilty"! This last month my family moved into our home. Mid-way through all the unpacking I had the need to start creating but I needed to load my EQ6 onto my new laptop. How come you can never find things when you're looking for it??? I went through box after box and no EQ6. I even offered to pay a reward to the girls if they would look for the software. No luck. Finally after looking at the price of the new EQ7 ($189.00) I decided to check eBay out. My luck was changing because I found a brand new copy (still in wrap) for $111.00 but with the option of submitting a Best Offer. Alright I'm feeling lucky, so I placed an offer for $100.00 and guess what…I got it! The box arrived in three days after paying for the auction and now I'm ready to roll.

Well, I hope I didn't talk too much on this post but it has been awhile. Take care and keep creating!

Tracy Ward

3-B Girl's Quilts

Pattern Giveaway

With the release of our new pattern "Trellis", we are hosting a pattern giveaway. Mother, Tracy M. Ward, states, “I want to teach my girls the love of creating through quilts.” Tracy said that she is still keeping hope open as the girls still hate to wind a bobbin, but they do contribute to the company by creating graphic designs, pattern names and occasionally doing some seam pressing.

This past August the threesome joined forces and released their seventh pattern, “Trellis”. The company’s policy is, “We create patterns for the lack-of-time quilter,” and the release of Trellis has proved that these three know what they are doing. When asked what makes Trellis such as easy quilt to make, Tracy said, “The pattern is great for Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs and Layer Cakes or if you need to put a dent in your fabric stash this is the pattern for you. Also with the gift giving season around the corner, a quilter can whip up a couple of these quilts for fast gift giving.”

With their quirky style, the design team is steady making strides to be one of the well-known quilt designers in a quilt world of traditional methods. They’re spreading their unorthodox way of quilting one pattern and interview at a time. Last year Tracy hosted Podcast Queen, Annie Smith, of Simple Arts (http://www.simplearts.com/) during her cross- country trip. Tracy showed Annie where to get the best BBQ in Texas. You can listen to this episode (153) on Simple Arts website. “Although I’ve been sewing and creating for over 20 years, I like to say I was “discovered” by Mark Lipinski (http://www.marklipinski.com/), then editor of Quilter’s Home Magazine,” said Tracy. One early Sunday morning, Mark thought he was responding to Tracy’s post from his online Yahoo Group Pickle Road, but was actually responding to Yahoo’s Group Quilt Designer. After he realized his error, he sent an apology to Tracy and offered to publish one of her patterns sight unseen. Tracy took Mark up on his offer and in March/April 2009 issue “Crazy Daisy” was show cased in Quilter’s Home with great reviews.

Tracy frequently designs patterns for websites such as QNNTv.com (La French) and GraceFullCreations.com (Watermelon Pencil Holder). Just recently, she was selected as one of the designers in Rachel Clark’s (http://www.rdkc.com/) Back Porch Fiber Art Show. “Egypt was my theme for a three-quarter length coat, however I took my theme back to Ancient Egypt. After watching many Discovery and NatGEO Channel documentaries on Egypt, I came up with a design that utilized intricate beading and gold fabric around the collar and hieroglyphic symbols all over the coat.” This coat can be seen touring throughout the country at one of Rachel Clark’s fiber art shows.

Contact Information
3-B Girl’s Quilts
13000 Vista del Norte #524
San Antonio, TX 78216
210-815-1016
http://www.3bgirlsquilts.com/

Have a creative day,Tracy & Girls

www.3bgirlsquilts.com

Where have I been? And My Favorite Blogs

I can finally catch my breath! This week was my last day of work until January and my first week of crafting full time. I also moved (along with five boxes of fabric) and my kids finally got a chance to see how many sewing machines mommy "really" has J It's funny how we can explain away the use of three sewing machines…you know "what if one breaks down, then what?" Anyway, I've been on this kick to finish up all my unfinished quilts. So far, I completed three and made a brand new quilt called "Trellis". Trellis will be a new pattern to my line after I work out the kinks. You can check it out on my Etsy shop.

OK now for my favorite Blogs…first up is the girl's from Lizzie B Cre8ive. I just love their bright and cheerful website and their funny antics. They just make me laugh!

Next up is Mary Engelbreit blog. I think I'm addicted to her fabric. Anyway I love reading the process how her first sketches transforms into fabric, cards or painting.

I just love, love, love Pink Chalk Studio by Kathy Mack. Lots of give aways and tutorials here. I like Kathy's quilting style so this is one of the places I go for inspiration.

Last but not least is Pink Penguin. Her work has been published in the Stitches magazine. She seems to find the coolest fabric and wait until you see what she come up with. I like to bring you up to date on what I've been doing.
November I spent the whole month planning and making my coat for the Back Porch Textile show, which was held in Pacific Grove, CA. I was plaqued with many stopping and starting sessions because of fear (this coat was going to be seen by no other than textile artist, Rachel D.K. Clark). After being pushed along by my children, I did finally complete the coat. I waited so long that I had to send the coat via next day delivery and that cost me a woping $95! Lesson learned here...won't do that again :-)

The theme of the show was to make a coat based on a country. My country was Egypt and I tooke that to Acient Egypt.

After sending my baby (coat) off into the world, December I held my second annual cookie swap party. This year I made a whole turkey that I put in a brine which made the turkey so flavorful. I heated the brine on the stove and added chicken broth, apple cider vingar, black pepper corns, fresh sage leaves, fresh tyme leaves and kosher salt. I let the turkey soak for four hours but I think it could have been longer. For a side dish, I served Creamy Potato Gratin. This was another hit with my guest. As you can see, I'm a big fan of the Food Network Channel and I like trying different recipes.

Today I feeling very creative so I will sign off. I wanted to spend a day of sewing and fixing some version of my favorite food which is seafood. Yesterday I came across this new show (well new for me) on Food TV. The show is called 5 Ingredient Fix. Well, this one recipe caught my eye, Beer Shrimp Boil. I decided then that this Beer Shrimp Boil will be my special dinner for today. Now, I can never do anything exactly the way your suppose to do it (it's the rebel in me), so I added some potatoes, fresh corn, snow crab legs and crawfish. And to top it off, I made the lemon and butter dipping sauce...mmm good! My mom and daughter's joined me for this feast and we ate everything!

Have a creative day,
Tracy & Girls
www.3bgirlsquilts.com

So what did you do with your summer???

I was lucky enough to have the month of July off...no work and no children! So I decided to get a handle on my scrap fabrics. I had fabric on my bed, table and in ziplock bags. I really hate throwing fabric away. If the fabric is at least 2", I use it. So this is what I came up with:

Yes that's right, potholders with ric rac. I placed these in my Etsy shop and they sold right away:-)

Then I started making some wonky log cabins (I really hate to do things the way you're suppose to). My daughter had a bunch of jeans she outgrow so I combined the two together. What do you think? Fashion forward? I got two thumbs up from both girls on the design.
Finally, I had this fat quarter of watermelon seed fabric for about ten years. School was starting soon so I thought about making a pencil holder (I looked at the prices for them in the store and they were $3.95!). This what I came up with:

The Watermelon Pencil Holder came out so great that I made it into a pattern. You can get this pattern for free by going to Grace Full Creations and signing up for free.

Have a creative day,
Tracy & Girls
www.3bgirlsquilts.com

My Cruise to Jamaica-"No Problem"

OK, now I have some time to tell you about my cruise. My best friend booked us a trip to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico. This was my first time going on a cruise. I was a little scared because I can't swim and there seem to be a lot of water out there :-) Anyway, I never felt so pampered in my life! I treated myself to a spy day. I got a facial, pedicure and paraphin (spelling) treatment while looking out on the water. What a beautiful sight.

Have a creative day,
Tracy & Girls
www.3bgirlsquilts.com

What I've been working on

I would like to share one of the patterns I've been working on. I've been busy with my daughter's first art showcase. I'm so proud of her. This was the first time she decided to enter something (with the encouragement from her art teacher). And guess what, she won best in her catergory!!

The good news didn't stop there. In the March/April issue of Quilter's Home, a version of my Crazy Daisy quilt was featured in the magazine (pictured below). I also release another pattern a month ago. It's called Playing with Shapes and measures

45" x 45" finished. You can purchase the pattern through my website.

Well, I have plenty more to share, but will have to do that in the next couple of days.

Have a creative day,
Tracy & Girls
www.3bgirlsquilts.com

Quilting Stash Winners

Sorry for the delay, but they girls have selected the winners for our patterns. Podcast Queen, Annie Smith, was doing a cross country trip and she sent out a message that she was looking to meet some of her listeners. I just so happen to read her blog and noticed that she was coming through San Antonio, TX. I emailed her and told her I would love to show her my local quilt shop, Creative Sewing Center that is located right up the street from me. I also told Annie that we can play tourist downtown and see the Alamo and the Riverwalk.

We had so much fun talking about everything quilting. She also opened my eyes to looking at my town with "tourist" eyes. So many things she pointed out to me I never bothered to noticed them. I made a promise to myself that I will go back downtown and take the time to enjoy the sights.

Annie told me she loves BBQ so we went to County Line BBQ on the Riverwalk. I wanted her to taste the Smoked Turkey. Annie couldn't believe how moist the meat was. After dinner, we headed off to my quilt shop owner, Dixie from Seven Heaven. Dixie's store is so cute and she has rows and rows of fabric!

Later that night Annie interviewed me for her podcast, Quilting Stash. She should have this up on her website as soon as she returns from her trip. I was thankful that she arrived at her destination safe and sound. If you have visited my website, you would see that I appeared in Quilter's Home Magazine. The article focused on inspirational journals and how we as quilters use them in designing patterns. I just so happen to visit my local Jo-Ann's and decided to pick up the latest issue Jan/Feb issue of Quilter's Home. I remembered sending my journal into Mark but I had no idea when or if my journal would appear in the magazine. It just so happened that I had my youngest daughter with me and my mom. Words can not explain seeing your name in print! My mom, daughter and I started jumping around in the store with people looking at us strangely. Oh well, I always say when my "album drops" they'll be sorry they treated me that way! This year I tried not to be a big scrooge for my kids sake. One day I caught an episode of Paula Dean's Holiday Cookie Swap. A bright light went off in my head and I said, "hey I can do that". I emailed a couple of my work buddies and set a date for December 22nd. I was originally going to just swap cookies and serve hot coco and hot apple cider but my friends are more of the party bunch. One friend email me back and said she was going to make pina colodas and I jumped right in and made my famour Hot Spiced Apple Cider (see previous post on this recipe). Then I remember that I had this eight pound ham that I needed to make. And then I couldn't just serve ham and cookies, right? Well you get the idea, I made a full meal for everyone. We had ham, spinach & art. dip, potato salad and dijon mustard marinated chicken drumetts.

The girls brought their own ginger bread house kit and set the house up. Gradually things started disapearing on and around the house. By the second day, the house was dismantled and the icing was gone!

You see the cup holding up the roof? They had some structural problems. LOL

I grab some cheap bags from our local grocery store right before the holidays not really sure on what I was going to do with them. They came in handy when I packaged my cookies up with some tissue paper and some ribbon.

Cookie Swap Bags

I have only one down note this holiday. First of all, I couldn't possible bring myself to blog because I still haven't finished quilting Teresa's table runner. Well today I can finally say, I'm done! I want to thank Teresa for her patience and understanding. I was caught up with finishing out my last week with school before the winter break. I also did my first craft fair a couple of weeks ago. I think I did pretty good for a one day show my girlfriend was holding at her job. I sold ten items, wow!!!

Anyway, check out what I got in the mail: (click on the picture to make larger)

It's a thank you note from the girls at LizzieBCre8ive . I got one t-shirt quilt I'm doing for a customer, writing directions for my Poseable Posies pattern, correcting my boo boo on the fall giveaway, and doing a new applique quilt. In the next few days I'll post some pictures of this applique quilt. This is my first quilt doing applique with MANY pieces. I even did them the traditional way by needle turn, wow. I'm giving away the Christmas/Holiday table runner (see photo). I will HAND QUILT this table runner with a holiday theme and apply matching binding. To get your name in the drawing for this table runner, just answer the following question:

Tell me about your funniest or silliest Fall memories

Alright, good luck and I hope to see some really funny stuff:-)

Have a creative day,
Tracy & Girls
www.3bgirlsquilts.com

PS I just noticed in my photo that I have some blocks that are turned the wrong way, OMG! OK this will be my funniest Fall memory. Anyway, If you are the winner of this table runner, I will fix my booboo.

Summer Vacation, Part II

This post is title Summer Vacation, Part II but it should be titled "How I survived My Summer Vacation Driving Across Country with My Mother!"

One of our summer highlights was traveling to New Jersey via car. Well we really didn't have a choice on whether to fly or go by car. Gas prices were just ridiculous! I believe the going airfare for one was $500 and we had to times that by four. Sometimes I can be math challenged but I knew that figure just wasn't going to work in my budget. Anyway, our passengers consist of my two girls, me and my mother. This sounds like a nice family outing but beware of traveling long distances with your mother!

Armed with map, snacks and kids we were off on the road around 2 am Texas time. Our plan was to get to Little Rock before lunch time traffic. I was the driver (dear mother can't see in the dark) and mother was the "map person". Everything was just fine until my mother decided that Mapquest didn't know what they were talking about and she remembered going another way before (10 years ago). I don't know about you, but I do know that highways have been put up and taken down within 10 years…ugh! So in order to keep the peace we went her way and yes we got lost. You would think she learned her lesson, right? I don't think so…

Well after a long day of getting lost and eating snacks, we decided to stop for the day and start out tomorrow fresh. Our first stop was Days Inn. Now, I'm not a hotel snob but when I stay on the road I just want the basic necessities like a clean bed, working phone and TV. We should have known we were in trouble when we picked up the telephone receiver and didn't get a signal! Entering into the bathroom, I was greeted with flashing light bulb that gave you a headache just looking at it and the walls had big gashing holes. My oldest daughter pulls back the bed sheets and screamed, "This looks like a crime scene! Look at all these stains on the bottom of the box spring!" We can laugh about this now but we couldn't wait to get out of Days Inn. I think we were traumatized and from that day on whenever we see a billboard for Days Inn boos and hisses erupt throughout the car.

My next post will cover the second leg of our trip. Until then please enjoy some of the pictures I took. The first photo is a sunset on the road and no I'm not driving. But are we going to right way? (Dear mother is driving)

The first photo is titled: Are we going the right way?

Until we chat again, have a creative week!

Tracy

www.3bgirlsquilts.com

And the Winner is...

Sorry this post is a day late. Since the girls and I got out of work and school we have been on the go. Our first trip was to the Texas Hill Country. We camped out for three days and cooked on the grill everyday.
And we had to have smores every night! We chose to go on the Forth of July weekend so the camp grounds where full and lively. My girls had a chance to drive a on Canon Lake.

I also caught some wild life picture also:

Ok, this is going to be post one of three of our 2008 summer trips.

PS. The black and white dress of Koto's made me want to set down and craft up something with these colors. The photo to the left is from Style.com Diane von Furstenburg's 2009 Ready To Wear collection. Quilters can you see the quilt pattern? Well I sure did. This inspired me to do a quilt with these colors. I kind of played around with the blocks by twisting and flipping them until I came up with this design.

Of course I have no name for this quilt, but I'm sure it will come to me. By the way, what a great response I got for naming my "African Sunflower" quilt! Thank you all! I will run the names by my partners (daughters) and we will select a name by Friday. Anyway, here is the black and white quilt in works.

Tracy M. The only thing that comes to mind is African Sunflowers but for some reason I'm not sure this will work. I would like to get other quilters input on what to title this quilt. First of all, this picture does not do the quilt justice. The flower petals are 3-D and can be adjusted.

Ok here is the catch! I'm offering a new copy of Amazingly Simple Star Quilts by Jeanne Stauffer and Sandra L. Hatch as a reward if your pattern name is selected. This book is a hard cover book with amazing star patterns.

So Please feel free to post on this blog with your title suggestions. I hope to select a winner by next friday.

Thanks for your help,

Tracy M. I've been busy starting a new job, going to school and designing new patterns.

A little update:

In July my family and I took another trip to Canyon Lake. We pitched our tent in the dark; cooked on the grill and fished everyday.

I developed a new pattern called Crazy Daisy (pictured on the left). I got totally inspired by Moda fabric Friends and Flowers by Marry Engelbreit. Crazy Daisy is available for wholesale at this time. Please contact me if your interested in having this pattern in your store.

Presently, I'm on a road trip from Texas to New Jersey. We drove through the beautiful mountains of Tennessee. What a breath taking view. I hope to have pictures up after we return. On our way to New Jersey we stopped in Nashville to visit the Nelly's BBQ (Down Home with the Nelly's) resturant. The pulled pork sandwich was devine! If you're ever in Nashville, be sure to stop by their resturant and order a pulled pork sandwich and be sure to top it off with the cole slaw.

OK, until I get back from my trip, Have a creative and happy summer!

Tracy

www.3bgirlsquilts.com

Looking for Pattern testers

I'm in need of some experienced quilters who can help me test three quilt pattern projects. My resolution is to design three summer quilting patterns. I want to try something different by submitting one of them to a national quilting magazine. My style is simple and quick quilts. I like to design for the beginner quilter or the lack of time quilter.

As it stands now, I have two patterns that I've published through Lulu.com. Lulu is a self-publishing website. You can do hardbacks, soft, dvd or audio. Be sure to check out the website. Anyway back to the patterns, my first pattern is a quilted table runner Vintage Flowers.

The other pattern is called I Love America!, which is a small quilted wall hanging.

I still trying to get my daughter to finish her quilt for her niece. She is the one pictures below. Also does anyone know how to erase pencil marks off of fabric? Yes, I did try an eraser :-) It got some of the pencil marking off, but I still see some left.

Well, this is a short post and will do better later. I out did myself by making four homemade batches of cookies to give as gifts. I tried my hand at Pecan Bars, Toffee cookies, chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies. The batches made enough for seven gifts and a big plate for Santa.

To the left is a picture of my dog "Puff". I was feeling pretty crafty. I got a pattern offline for a dress (will provide link later). I had to add some extra inches around the middle for my dog. She is small but hairy. I used left over felt fabric from a jacket I made for my daughter. The white trimming is just batting material cut in strips. She was the talk of the neighborhood.

Hey, my name was published online by the one and only "First Quilting Podcast" Annie Smith. Please check out her December 19Th Podcast "What I want for Christmas". I listen to Annie every day. Please check her out and donate to her tip jar to keep her podcast free from advertisement.

I am such a proud parent! This is my daughter designing her first quilt for her niece. I let her in my quilting stash and we took and trip to the local quilting store for the backing. She did all the designing herself and I tried to stay out of the way. I will upload a picture of the finished quilt soon.

That is all for now, but stay tuned.

Tracy

www.3bgirlsquilts.com

Happy Holidays to all Quilters

I like to wish all quilters a happy Holiday.
